
When the concentration of oxalate in the blood gets too high, oxalate binds with calcium. Then it precipitates in the body in very sharp crystals. Kidney stones, for example, are normally composed of calcium oxalate. But the oxalate crystals can precipitate anywhere in the body and cause pain there.
